Monaco Game Review: So, a Gentleman, Pickpocket, and Hacker Walk into a Casino…

Monaco long

… maybe a Red Head, Lookout, and Locksmith as well. If you’ve ever wanted to be one of the above, then you should play the game “Monaco: What’s Yours is Mine”– http://www.monacoismine.com/

For $15 you can get it on Steam of XBox Live and go on collaborative heists with friends and strangers.

Single player mode has it’s own flavor, as you get to (and are forced) to come back as another character in the game with a different set of skills, completing the mission from where your predecessor left off. Here are the characters:

The Locksmith: The locksmith is playable from the start and his color is blue. He has the ability to pick lock doors and safes faster than any other character. His secondary ability is that he can open cash registers and ATM’s faster than any other character.

The Pickpocket: The pickpocket is playable from the start and his color is yellow. He has the ability to send his pet monkey Hector to grab coins. Hector won’t alert guards. The pickpockets secondary ability is to hide in bushes faster than any other character.

The Cleaner: The cleaner is playable from the start and his color is pink. He has the ability to knock out unsuspecting enemies. The Cleaner’s second ability is to use medi-kits faster than any other character.

The Lookout: The lookout is playable from the start and her color is red. She has the ability to see every NPC in the level when she sneaks. The Lookout’s secondary ability is to enter vents, open windows and stairs faster than any other character. She also runs faster than any other character.

The Mole: The Mole is an unlockable character and his color is violet. He has the ability to dig through walls. The Mole’s secondary ability is that he can enter secret passages faster than any other character. The Mole can also break jewel cases faster than any other character.

The Gentleman: The gentleman is an unlockable character and his color is teal. He has the ability to disguise himself when hidden. The Gentleman’s secondary ability is to enter getaway vehicles faster than any other character.

The Hacker: The hacker is an unlockable character and his color is green. He has the ability to make viruses from wall outlets. He has a secondary ability which makes him hack computers and disable cameras faster than any other character.

The Redhead: The redhead is an unlockable character and her color is orange. She has the ability to charm a single enemy and calm them. Charmed enemies can open locked doors instantly for her. The Redhead’s secondary ability allows her to revive fallen teammates faster than any other character.

At first, you feel quite vulnerable and on edge, but as soon as your stealthy, clandestine spy instincts kick in, you start robbing these places blind. The mechanics of the game are quite simple, and the feedback of the game is thoughtfully laid out. Still, there’s a lot to get used to considering the somewhat well balanced, yet distinct, character experiences. My favorite is the Gentleman.

The game is rated T for Teen for: blood, crude humor, mild language, suggestive themes, use of tobacco, violence, and heavy french accents. It’s games like this that will be blamed for increasing heist rates of our nation, not to mention increasing number of attempts at saying “guard” as a frenchman. Is it worth mentioning that there’s only 2 women out of the 8, and they aren’t allowed to pee in the toilets? Without giving too many spoilers, I found that the game redeems the woman character(s) by the end of the game– making the female caricatures forgivable.

The collaborative aspect of the game resembled that of the old Gauntlet arcade series.

Finally, I highly recommend playing the game to the end. Not only are the levels satisfying, it uses the game mechanics to communicate some pretty major twists. Above all else I appreciate the clever exchange between mechanic and narrative in Monaco. It’s also one of the most effective deployments of procedurally generated music.
